Language and Lexicon

Teaching is full of acronyms. Here are some of the key ones that will show up on the blog for Fairly ELementary.

EL - English Learner

  • ELL - English Language Learner
  • ESL - English as a Second Language
  • ESOL - English as a Second Language
  • EAL - English as an Additional Language
Sheltered Instruction - a period of the day when EL students are self-contained. In states like Tennessee, the amount of time per day a student can spend in a sheltered setting is dependent on their proficiency level.

SIFE - Students with Interrupted Formal Education. This would be typical among refugee populations where students were unable to attend regular school. We look at usually 2 years interrupted to qualify.

NTE - New to English. These students are low scoring on WIDA and have recently arrived to the country, so needs lots of reinforcements with BICS.
